We all have moments in life when perspective truly changes our view.
This banner was gifted to me by my parents on my confirmation day. My mother was so proud and had put many hours of thought and care into its creation. As a 14-year-old girl, however, I did not want a gold felt and burlap banner. I wanted jewelry like all the other girls—something I could wear, like a ring or a necklace. Looking back, I can see how vain and ungrateful I was in that moment.
How could I have been so unappreciative?
My mom has been gone for some time now, but I still think of her every day—and of the Godly perspective she so faithfully shared. She would remind me, “Give it to the Lord, Joy. He sees further down the road than we do.”
Yes… He does.
The banner is now prominently displayed above the staircase I pass each morning on my way to the kitchen for my morning coffee. As I read, “Joy. Saved to serve!” I can’t help but think of my mom as a divine messenger.
It is a message I now understand very differently than I did as a young girl. What she was giving me was not something meant to be worn, but something meant to be lived—a message a ring or necklace could never carry.
In those moments, I am reminded of Christ’s sacrifice for us all, and that my own life and service are not my own, but a calling to serve the Lord.
Thanks, Mom. Message received.
To all mothers—thank you for the love, sacrifice, wisdom, and faith you pour into your families each and every day. Your influence reaches further than you may ever know. Wishing you a blessed and joyful Mother’s Day!
